Civilian Conservation Corps info and pictures

The Indiana Historical Society has added 150 photographs to its collection, depicting Civilian Conservation Corps camps in Jackson, Jennings, Lawrence, and Orange counties 1934-1936. The photo here is from North Vernon camp no. 1514, where the men built structures in Muskatuck State Park.

The society's web site is not terribly transparent, but more materials are available with a site search, digital image search, or library catalog search.

Many more official records of the government jobs program are at the National Archives and Record Administration, Record Group 35, with two on-line films playable here.

Great timely post Harold! I've been slightly looking into the CCC. I suspect (waiting for verification from NARA) that my Battle of the Bulge soldier worked for the CCC prior to the war. Came to that theory after reviewing unlabeled photos I have of him in a camp that I'm told by the fine folks at Pritkzer Military Library could be a CCC camp. Although we were originally thinking the Army was training soldiers at this one. But I think he looks too young. So I initiated a search.

Anyway - the Pritzker Military Library has "The Tree Army. A Pictorial History of the Civilian Conservation Corps, 1933-1942." Written by Stan Cohen. I have it right now. Excellent book if anyone is looking into further history.

Thanks, Ron! Just one more reason to join the Indiana Genealogical Society!
